Captain Stephen Fleming was included in New Zealand's starting squad for Thursday's opening Test against England after overcoming an abdominal strain.
He's expected to open the batting with Mark Richardson. Shane Bond, though, was left out as the tourists confirmed their 11-man lineup. Bond, New Zealand's quickest bowler, continues to recover from a lengthy back injury. Coach John Bracewell said he hoped Bond would be ready for the second Test at Headingley on June 3.
While Fleming was chosen, England skipper Michael Vaughan is a serious doubt because of a right knee injury.
Starting squad: Stephen Fleming, Mark Richardson, Nathan Astle, Scott Syris, Chris Cairns, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey, Chris Martin.
