SCHOOLCHILDREN, LED by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his ministerial colleagues performed mass ‘Surya Namaskar’ across the State on Thursday as part of the State government’s efforts to popularise Yoga for a ‘ Healthy mind and body’ amidst symbolic protests from minorities groups and organisations.
The programme was opposed by several minorities groups, including the Jamait-e-Hind, and some Christian organisations, who had termed the State sponsored initiative as an encroachment on their religious freedom. It was telecast across the State.
Along with token protest against its introduction in schools, in Seoni town, some organisations distributed handouts asking people not to participate in it.
Cabinet colleagues of Chouhan led the performance at district level functions where school student – and jail inmates in Gwalior – participated.
The programme, according to official reports passed off with out any incident barring a minor one in Shadol district where a sixth standard student fainted during the Pranayam programme.
Uttam Bhujia, of Saraswati Shishu Mandir, recovered after being administered oral rehydration solution, agency reports quoting doctors said. Reports of schoolchildren developing headaches and general discomfort were also received from other schools like the Maharani Laxmibai School, official sources said.
The Congress termed the programme a defiance of the High Court order. Though it claimed it was not against the Yoga exercise it said it opposed the way the BJP government sought to promote a particular method.
Indore: In all 7.50 lakh students in seven districts of Indore division performed Surya Namaskar on Thursday. This included about two lakh children of Indore district.
At Indore the main function was held at Nehru Stadium in the morning, where about 11,000 schoolchildren participated in the exercise along with Public Works Department Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, District Collector Vivek Aggarwal, school education department officials and trained Yoga teachers.
Jabalpur: Around 10,000 school students led by health minister Ajay Vishnoi performed the ‘Surya Namaskar’ and ‘Pranayam’ at the district main function at Pt. Ravi Shukla Stadium. Even muslim students and teachers of a Government Urdu Primary School at Motinullah area, performed the exercise.
Surya Namaskar was organised in different schools of urban and rural areas. State government officials claimed over two lakh students across the State participated in the ‘Surya Namaskar’ programme.
Guna: Thousands of boy and girl students participated in the programme. Several Children were seen sporting the tri-colour on the occasion. Around 6,000 students lined up in about 100 rows from 25 Government and 18 non-Government schools at the Sanjay Stadium premises here. Over one lakh from nearly 2,433 educational institutions took part in the programme from all over the district. The programme lasted nearly 40 minutes.
Sehore: Large number of school children participated at the Surya Namaskar drill held along with the Pranayam programme here in 12 steps at the Sports Complex grounds.
District Education Officer RP Sen said that the children’s participation in the twin programmes was overwhelming. According to sources a sizeable number of schools in the town registered low to very low attendance of students today.
