More than 100 people have died and 596 were admitted in hospitals in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions of eastern Uttar Pradesh with suspected Japanese encephalitis (JE), a health department official said at Maharajganj on Sunday.
The maximum number of 25 deaths occurred at Kushinagar district hospital where there were 131 suspected JE cases, Additional Director (Health) Umakant Prasad said.
He said there were over 100 deaths in the region due to the disease and 596 were admitted in various hospitals for treatment.
He said 161 patients were admitted and 23 succumbed to JE in Gorakhpur district whereas 14 patients out of 89 admitted in hospitals in Maharajganj died of the disease. Another 8 deaths were reported in Maharajganj district.
Six persons died in Sant Kabir Nagar while three in Siddharth Nagar district due to suspected JE, he said adding that a majority of patients were coming from Bihar and Nepal for treatment.
