'PM can't be blamed'

MDMK chief Vaiko said Prime Minister AB Vajpayee should not be blamed for the April 12 stampede in Lucknow, in which 22 women lost their lives.

MDMK chief Vaiko on Friday said Prime Minister AB Vajpayee should not be blamed for the April 12 stampede in Lucknow, in which 22 women lost their lives.

Speaking to reporters here, Vaiko said "Vajpayee is still a respectable leader. The idea to distribute sarees was that of an election agent of Vajpayee and it was done without making proper arrangements."

On Sri Lanka, Vaiko said "President Chandrika Kumaratunga had dismissed an elected Government and jeopardised the peace process in that island. But India must play a positive and decisive role in bringing peace there," he said.

Earlier, addressing an an election campaign of PMK candidate AK Moorthy, Vaiko said the outcome of the Lok Sabha election in Tamil Nadu would be a lesson to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
