After the Mexican peasant shirt, it’s the poncho that has found place in Indian wardrobes. If you haven’t got a one yet, its time you did. Winter this year will be all about colourful ponchos in pretty pinks, mauves, violets and blues in wool, knits and even chiffon.

Designers such as Shane and Phalguni Peacock, Priya Kataria and Ranna Gill and Ashima and Leena Singh had models draped in ponchos in the Lakme India Fashion Week this year, but now this pheasant garment from Mexico has made its transition to street stores at prices that are affordable and colours that will just entice you.

“Ponchos make a cool statement: its feminine because it has fringes and can be worn with either a fitted skirt or a pair of denim trousers,” says Ranna Gill. Her collection of ponchos is embellished with embroidery and sequins on the neck.

“This season, ponchos get a trendy with sequins, embroidery and beaded work on them,” says designer Ashima Singh, who showcased tussar ones at the Fashion Week.

For a retro look, get a crocheted one, or opt for georgette and chiffon with simple embroidery for for evenings out. Wear it over a tank top and you’ll be all set to wow people.
