Won't tolerate damage to Dalit memorials: Maya

Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday warned Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) government of strong retaliation by her party workers if the memorials and parks built by her government in honour of Dalit icons were damaged.
"We will not be silent spectators. If the Samajwadi Party government plans to make new constructions in the memorials and parks, the law and order situation might worsen, not only in the state but across the country," she said.
The former chief minister reminded SP that her government, after coming to power in 2007, had not damaged any memorial built by the previous Mulayam Singh government.
"The SP government should take a lesson from my government. We maintained the dignity of the memorials, parks and museums constructed by their government to honour their icons," Mayawati said.
"No new constructions were carried out in the parks and employees deployed in those parks were not removed by my government."
Recently, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had announced that while the previous regime had built several parks and statues, his government would focus on setting up an IT park in Lucknow to attract companies to the state capital.
On Friday, state PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav sacked senior officers of the Rajkiya Nirman Nigam, a government organisation, who were looking after BSP memorials and parks in Lucknow and Noida.
Meanwhile, SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said, “after squandering crores of rupees she (Mayawati) is afraid of giving its account, and is out to disturb law and order of the entire country.”
