Instead of seeing emotions as problems to be fixed, you can begin to see them as experiences that need space, awareness, and presence to move.

You may have learned to handle your emotions without ever being taught how to truly feel them. Happiness is usually welcomed, while anger, grief and fear are often treated as emotions that need to be controlled, overcome or quickly moved past. Over time, you may become good at keeping yourself composed while losing touch with what is actually happening inside you.

This is where the idea of emotional fluidity offers a different way of looking at your inner world. Instead of seeing emotions as problems to be fixed, you can begin to see them as experiences that need space, awareness, and presence to move.

Emotional fluidity is not about expressing every emotion without thought. It is about learning to feel what is present without immediately suppressing, judging, fixing or escaping it. It also means understanding the difference between unconsciously reacting to an emotion and consciously allowing yourself to experience it. For many people, this is not something they were ever taught.

Emotions are meant to move

In Maa Anand Sarita’s approach to emotional fluidity, each emotion has a natural arc. It rises, moves through you and eventually completes. However, you may have learned to interrupt this process by pushing difficult feelings away or trying to control them.

You may distract yourself when you feel uncomfortable, keep busy so you do not have to think about what is happening inside, or explain your emotions instead of actually experiencing them.

Your body may hold what you do not express

You can appear calm on the outside while still carrying something unresolved within you. Simply talking about an emotion, thinking about it or becoming more aware of your patterns does not necessarily mean that you have fully experienced the emotion itself.

Emotional fluidity encourages you to become more willing to feel. Through breath, movement, sound, awareness and other somatic approaches, you can explore what happens when you allow an emotion to be experienced through the body rather than keeping it only at the level of thought.

The aim is not to force an emotion to disappear. Instead, you give yourself permission to stay present with it and allow it to move.

Beneath the emotion is energy

From this perspective, an emotion is not something you necessarily have to fight. When you stop resisting what is already present and become more aware of your experience, something can begin to shift.

Tantric traditions, including Sarita’s approach, describe this process as transforming emotion into “nectar.” In this view, difficult emotions can become part of a deeper process of awareness when you meet them with presence rather than resistance.

Perhaps emotional freedom does not mean that you stop experiencing difficult feelings. It may begin with learning that you do not have to abandon yourself whenever those feelings arise.
