Plastic ban: Can railways fine passengers in Maharashtra? Nobody really knows

They have sought clarification from state and civic authorities about the plastic ban and fines, but they are yet to get any response.

In the absence of clear directives from the state government or civic bodies, railway authorities in Mumbai and its satellite towns are confused about implementation of the plastic ban on their premises.

Railway officials said they had taken adequate steps to bar people from using plastic and thermocol products. But they conceded that they are in dark about penalty.

They had sought clarification from the state and civic authorities about the plastic ban and fine, but they are yet to receive any response. “We have written to the state government, seeking their permission to charge fine. We might charge the fines under anti-littering and authorise station masters and ticket checkers to do so,” said a senior railway officer. CR and WR said another grey area is related to passengers who arrive from other state where there is no ban on plastic. These passengers will not be aware of the ban.
