Govt for reviving ambitious Dharavi makeover project

The stalled Dharavi redevelopment project is inching back on track, with the state looking to appoint a project consultant for the revamp of four sectors of one of Asia’s largest slums.

The fifth sector is being developed by Mhada. The tenders to select the bid management consultancy will be issued next month.

The consultant is expected to hand-hold the authorities through the bidding process for the redevelopment of 175 hectares, which will rehabilitate around 50,000 families in new homes.

The consultant will have to prepare a master plan along with the bid document, which will detail the selection criteria for interested parties.

Sticking to its 2007 decision, the state plans to redevelop the four sectors through private partnerships, by offering land as incentive to rehabilitate existing tenants.

“We want to ensure there’s integrated development, with developers creating the entire infrastructure,” said Jayant Kumar Banthia, chief secretary.
