The police said the theft took place on the third floor flat of Aakar building on Thursday between 2 pm and 5 pm, when Shekhar Iyer, 34, was at work and his wife, Uma, was at the bank.

When Uma returned home from the bank, she found the broken cupboard and cash and valuables were missing and immediately informed her husband and the police.

The police suspect that one of the visitors at a clinic located on the ground floor of the building could be involved in the theft.

The police said the accused could have entered the building posing as a patient, gone to the third floor and carried out the robbery.

The police also suspect the accused knew that no one was at home at that time.

The Kurar police also questioned the watchman but he could he recall anyone suspicious because many visitors enter and exit the building every day.

“We have registered a case of house breaking against an unidentified person and are carrying out inquiries to trace his identity. We have also requested the building authorities to take precautionary measures to avoid similar incidents in the future,” said Mohan Sankhe, senior inspector of the Kurar police station.
