Chandigarh: 45-year-old man killed after being hit by taxi

A 45-year-old man died after being hit by a taxi in Sector 26 late last night. The victim, Rajiv, worked with a private firm and was a resident of Sector 28. Police have registered a case under Section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of the IPC at the Sector 26 police station.

State may impose cess on fuel for welfare of auto-taxi drivers

The state government of Maharashtra, India, is considering imposing a 1 paise per litre levy on petrol and diesel or a levy of up to INR1,000 ($15) on commercial or luxury vehicle registration to fund a proposed welfare board for 13 lakh taxi, autorickshaw and truck drivers and cleaners. The other option under consideration is budgetary allocation from the transport department's annual revenue. The welfare board is expected to introduce eight to nine schemes providing health, education, pension and assistance in case of fatal accidents to drivers earning less than INR10,000 per month.

New tech boosting recovery of stolen phones

As per an RTI, in 2019, out of 43,397 mobile handsets that were reported stolen or lost in the city, only 2,088 phones were recovered. In 2020, 39,819 phones were reported missing or stolen, out of which, 1,916 were recovered. Similarly, in 2021, out of 51,030 missing phones, only 3,230 was recovered.
