No time for gymming? Try this!

Are you one of those who struggles to find time to gym every day? Well, you don't need to go to one every day. Skip the gym and try High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Shahab Kalim, winner of Jerai Physique Competition in 2017 & lawyer based in Kolkata says, “In the gym, it's the quality of focus that matters. Mike Mentzer, Arnold Schwarzenegger's fierce rival, was a big fan of HIIT. He said that training should be brief and intense to attain the best result in the shortest time.” Burning calories in a short period of time, good heart health without any equipment, and increased metabolism are some of the benefits of HIIT. However, you need to keep a few things in mind. Always stretch properly and warm up before starting HIIT workouts, ensure you get proper nutrition before and after the workout, and don't overdo it by extending it to an hour. This is how you can control your diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which increases the glucose levels in the blood. It can lead to serious health problems like kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke etc. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent and control diabetes. Exercise helps in increasing glucose utilisation by cells, making insulin more efficient and thus helping to lose weight. But the good news is that you can manage your diabetes through regular exercise. Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Endocrinologist, and Diabetologist on Lybrate, Delhi, says, “Do regular aerobic exercises in moderate intensity – like brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing -- for 30 to 60 minutes daily. You could also play casual sports like basketball, football, table tennis and badminton etc., at least 5 times a week.” He says that even day to day chores can help you stay healthy.“Incidental exercises, too, are very beneficial. Performing routine tasks such as using stairs, vacuuming, walking short distances, washing the car, playing with pets and children, or gardening can help improve your overall fitness.” However, if you suffer from heart disease, poor vision, and limited mobility then consult your doctor before starting any exercise regime. Dr. Minal Vohra, Medical Advisor, BeatO, Jaipur says that strength training is another method which helps control diabetes. “A gym environment may not be for everyone. Resistance exercises can be done two-three times a week even at home with the help of stretch bands, hand-held weights or just your own body weight. Some simple strength training techniques include lifting free weights, sit-ups, planks, squats and pushups.” Stretching too is an important part of the exercise, especially for those suffering from diabetes. It not only prevents muscle soreness and cramps but it helps in lowering stress, increasing flexibility, and cools down muscles after exercise.

Here is what you need to know about blood cancer

Cancer, one of the most terrible diseases in the world, can affect any organ of the body, including blood cells. Symptoms and signs depend upon what part is involved with the disease. Dr Ashay Karpe, consultant medical oncologist, haematologist and bone marrow transplant physician at Fortis SL Raheja Hospital, Mumbai, says, “Certain types of blood cancers like acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (especially amongst children), Hodgkin's lymphoma, etc have very high cure rate -- almost 80 to 90%. Blood cancers like chronic myeloid leukaemia are managed with oral tablets which can be taken at home. Certain high risk cancers require stem cell transplant to achieve better results,” As medical science is evolving constantly, newer modalities of treatment like immunotherapy (besides chemotherapy) are being developed, which have better results and fewer side effects. Early diagnosis of these cancers, along with regular treatment by experts increases the chance of cure. Uma Dangi, consultant medical oncologist at Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, says, “Anaemia because of low haemoglobin can cause fatigue and shortness of breath on exertion. Low platelets can lead to red spots on the skin or bleeding. There is an increased risk of infections which may result in fever. Bone pains, night sweats and weight loss are among other symptoms. Lymphomas may present as swellings in the neck, armpit or groin area. Abdominal Lymph Nodes can cause pain or bloating sensation of the stomach. A complete blood count may yield the diagnosis in some cases.” The minimum investigations required for diagnosis are a complete blood count, peripheral smear examination, coagulation profile and lymph node excision biopsy.

This meal of the day can help you lose weight

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and skipping it would not only make you gain weight but may also lead to lifestyle-related diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Researchers from Tel Aviv University & Hebrew University in Israel found that eating breakfast helps in regulating the post-meal glucose and insulin responses. So, if you have breakfast before 9 30 am, it will improve the metabolism rate of your body, leading to weight loss Dr. Anil Mehta, general physician on Lybrate, Delhi says, “skipping breakfast can not only make your metabolism dip, but also leave you lethargic... A good breakfast made up of carbohydrates and lean protein can help reduce cravings and overeating for the rest of the day.” And here is how you gain weight if you skip the morning meal. Dr. Anil Mehta also added “as the day wears on, serotonin levels dip, and you get cravings for chocolate, cookies, and other similar foods. Eating these causes an increase in serotonin levels and the body begins to associate good feelings with them, creating an addictive cycle.” Then you may ask- What if I wake up after 10 am? Nutritionist from Portea Medical in Bangalore, Priyanka Verma says “our body is primed to look for food when we wake up in the morning. So ideally we should have a healthy breakfast within two hours of waking up.” Having your breakfast would also make the brain alert and improve concentration levels, immunity, and cognitive functions. Verma says “It also helps avoid gas and acidity, boosts heart health and your mood, and keeps you calm.” Cortisol and adrenaline levels are at their peak in the morning and hence the brain requires energy. “This leads to activation of an emergency system, pulling energy from muscles and destroying muscle tissue in the process. When one eats later in the day, the body saves energy from the food as fat because the body and brain are still in high-alert mode,” says Priyanka Verma. So if you want to lose weight, have a hearty meal in the morning

Is olive oil the healthiest fat for your diet?

Olive oil is advertised as the healthiest oil available, but is it really as healthy? Nutritionist and fitness consultant Iram Zaidi says “To be honest there is no oil (or any specific kind of food) that promotes fat loss. The only thing that helps is being calorie deficit and adjusting your macros.” Here is how you can choose the right fat for your diet. As per dietician Pooja Thacker from Bhatia Hospital, “Smoke point—or temperature at which the oil starts to break down—is another factor,” she says adding, “MUFA is anti-atherogenic so it is good even when it gets deposited in arteries. It is good for people who have platelet coagulation. MUFA helps prevention of cardiac diseases.” It is important to look out for PUFA and MUFA content in the oils. Also, PUFA has omega 3, which is anti-inflammatory and prevents diseases such as diabetes and depression. Janvi Chitalia, fitness nutritionist agrees. “The truth about cooking oil is there is no specific oil that can aid fat loss as oil is made of pure fats (1 unit of fat = 9 calories). However, switching from a diet high in saturated fat to one high in monounsaturated fat can help,” she says. So which are the best oils? Olive oil is considered healthy but is not good or Indian cooking. And though coconut oil is very light and easily digestible, it cant be used for most Indian food. Our experts suggest Canola oil... which has higher omega-3 content and a lower percentage of saturated fats. However, no matter which oil you pick, its consumption must be moderate. Fat should not constitute more than 20% of the total calorie intake. Remember what experts always say: The key to fitness is to keep everything in moderation.
