Heartbreaking visuals show the aftermath showed belongings of girls and other campers outside Camp Mystic. People place a cross near the Guadalupe River in honour of those who lost their lives. A counselor and three children from Camp Mystic are still unaccounted for.

Another image showed rescue teams, including those who arrived from Mexico, working hard under the sun, scouring the water for those still missing from the camp. The haunting visuals are a reminder of the devastating loss several families are going through since the deadly Texas floods hit the campsite.

Camp Mystic flood: What happened?

Torrential rainfall led to the Guadalupe River overflowing its banks in a matter of minutes. The raging water reached Camp Mystic, which was located near the river. Around 750 girls were staying at the summer camp when the Guadalupe water levels rose to over 26 feet in less than one hour and washed away the camp at 4 am local time on July 4. The deadly July 4 flooding led to an inconceivable tragedy for the residents of Texas and the entire country.

At Camp Mystic, many of the cabins that were most affected in the flooding were located in an area that had been identified by the federal government as the “highest-risk location for inundations from the Guadalupe,” CNN reported. While new cabins were built by the camp in a less-risky flood zone, the buildings in the most danger were not relocated.

On July 6, Texas Governor Greg Abbott visited the site and vowed to find every person who was missing. He wrote, "Today I visited Camp Mystic. It, and the river running beside it, were horrendously ravaged in ways unlike I’ve seen in any natural disaster. The height the rushing water reached to the top of cabins was shocking. We won’t stop until we find every girl who was in those cabins,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
