Severe storms moving through southwest Michigan on Friday triggered tornado warnings, with videos circulating online showing a Menards store in Three Rivers hit by a tornado, causing significant damage.

As of Friday afternoon, two counties, Cass and St. Joseph, in Southwest Michigan were under a tornado warning. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the tornado in St. Joseph County.
The tornado appeared while a violent thunderstorm moved across the area. Storm chasers and emergency management personnel in St. Joseph County reported to the weather service that the tornado touched down many times before causing damage on the southwest side of Three Rivers shortly before 4 p.m. local time.

Videos shared widely online show the aftermath of storm damage at a Menards store in Three Rivers, a city in southwest Michigan’s St. Joseph County.
Debris could be seen around the building and nearby parking areas as heavy winds tore through the area. Following the storm, roof pieces and building materials were spread around the site.

Additionally, local authorities informed the weather service that a tornado in neighboring Cass County, Michigan, between Niles and Edwardsburg had left someone trapped and in need of extrication, per USA Today.

Storms in St. Joseph County faces power outage
The storms also triggered widespread power outages across southwest Michigan, with utility companies reporting thousands of customers without electricity across multiple counties, including St. Joseph.
According to the Indiana Michigan Power Company's outage map, 5,414 customers were without power as of 4:30 p.m. Friday. Power is expected to be restored to St. Joseph County by 9 p.m.
Additionally, Cass County reported fewer than 100 individuals without power. According to a Consumers Energy outage map, more than 2,000 residents in Calhoun County were without power on Friday afternoon.
