Porsche sports car goes up in flames after crash in Gurugram

Police said that the car’s driver, Mankirat Singh, 35, a resident of Sushant Lok-1, had sustained severe burn injuries on his arms and legs, and was admitted at a private hospital in Sector-38

A Porsche sports car went up into flames and was reduced to ashes after it veered off the road and rammed into a tree on Golf Course Road near Sector 27 on Thursday morning, said police.

Police said that the car’s driver, Mankirat Singh, 35, a resident of Sushant Lok-1, had sustained severe burn injuries on his arms and legs, and was admitted at a private hospital in Sector-38.

Pictures of the car were shared on social media websites on Thursday. Police said only the melted parts of the car remained. The Porsche monogram on the car’s rear end was one of the parts that remained intact.

Nitish Kumar Agarwal, deputy commissioner of police (east), said that Singh told police that he was alone in the car at the time of the accident. He said that he lost control over the vehicle when he tried to avoid a dog that suddenly appeared before him on the road.

“The commuters on the stretch took him to a private hospital and informed his family,” he said.

Investigators said that Singh was returning home after attending a birthday party. He was travelling from Sector 56 on Golf Course Road towards Sikanderpur when the accident took place. It was around 4am and it was still dark outside, they added.

Police said that impact was so powerful that the two-seater 911 Carrera model of the car, which costs around ₹ 2.2 crore, exploded into flames soon after the collision. They said parts of the car were scattered up to 100-150 metres away from the accident spot.

Agarwal said that the car first slammed a median near the traffic signal in Sector-27 on Golf Course Road after which it leapt over a service lane before hitting a tree on the roadside. “The driver probably steered the vehicle sharply to avoid hitting the dog and ended up losing control. The car was registered in Chandigarh, and it had a choice number of ‘911’ which matched the vehicle model,” he said.

Police said despite the impact of the accident, Singh was able to get out of it in the nick of the time before fire originating from the engine completely engulfed the car.

Agarwal said that fire tenders rushed to the spot after the accident. However, the high-strength aluminium body completely melted in the flames, they said.

Police have not received any complaint from Singh but have recorded his statement. Teams have visited the spot and conducted investigation.

Meanwhile, Singh did not respond to calls and messages on Thursday.
