4:01 PM IST Up next for the White Ferns is a clash against India on Thursday, 23rd October in Navi Mumbai, while Pakistan will take on South Africa here in Colombo on Tuesday, 21st October. A blockbuster encounter awaits on Sunday, 19th October, as India face England at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. It rained in Indore on Saturday, but we hope for better fortunes on Sunday. The first ball will be bowled at 9.30 am GMT, and as always, do join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
4:27 PM IST You might be wondering how South Africa have already qualified even though England, India, and New Zealand can still catch up if they lose their remaining two games. The explanation lies in the tiebreaker rules. When teams finish on equal points, the first criterion is the number of wins, and net run rate is considered only if the wins are equal. For example, New Zealand currently have 4 points. If they beat India and England, they would finish with 8 points. India, if they beat Bangladesh and England, would also end up with 8 points. England, if they beat Australia, would have 9 points. If South Africa lose both of their remaining matches, they would also finish on 8 points. In that scenario, India and South Africa would have 4 wins each, while New Zealand can only end up with 3 wins.
3:55 PM IST Pakistan's skipper, Fatima Sana says that the team got a good start but lost a few wickets. She believes they had a chance to reach 180 and expresses confidence in the bowling unit, given the way they have performed here in Colombo. She hopes the batters will have a better performance in the next game. Overall, she is happy with the bowling but acknowledges that the batting needs improvement. She emphasises the importance of playing well in the remaining matches. Regarding the pitches in Colombo, she observes that although it is expected to assist spinners, she finds movement and enjoys bowling on it. On her captaincy, she admits it is challenging because the team is not winning, but she appreciates the support from her teammates and enjoys leading the side.
4:27 PM IST The skipper of New Zealand, Sophie Devine, says that they were hopeful, given that even after 5 hours of rain break, South Africa and Sri Lanka managed to get back on the park. Believes that they were in a good position but it's extremely frustrating to wait for four years for the World Cup, and the rain has a major say. Adds that everyone in the dressing room is unhappy with their luck, as they wanted to play cricket. Also says that they need to bag the last two wins in the group stage. Ends up saying that it is going to be a challenge to play India but they will look forward to the challenge.
3:53 PM IST Time for the presentation ceremony...
4:11 PM IST Earlier, after the toss went their way, New Zealand chose to bowl first, with rain and the possibility of the DLS method looming. Pakistan’s openers got off to a steady start, though Omaima Sohail struggled to get going, while Muneeba Ali looked fluent, striking four delightful boundaries in her brisk 22. The White Ferns were not at their best with the ball, but Lea Tahuhu stood out and reduced Pakistan to 52 for 3 when rain brought the first interruption. After more than an hour’s delay, play resumed with the game reduced to 46 overs a side. Aliya Riaz and Natalia Pervaiz steadied the innings with a useful partnership, but just as they were beginning to settle, Pervaiz perished trying to attack Eden Carson. Amelia Kerr then produced a beauty to dismiss Fatima Sana, and before Pakistan could stitch a recovery, rain returned with the score being 92/5 after 25 overs, and the game never resumed.
4:10 PM IST Well, it’s official! THE GAME HAS BEEN ABANDONED. It continues to rain, and despite a couple of breaks, it was simply not possible to get the ground ready for play before the cut-off time, even if it were to stop right now. With this outcome, SOUTH AFRICA HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE SEMIS. It is the second consecutive no result for both sides and they share a point each. When the fixtures were announced, New Zealand would have fancied their chances against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, hoping to claim four points, but the rain has limited them to two. This takes their tally to 4 points from 5 games, with a solitary win and two washouts. As a result, their remaining games against India and England become even more crucial. For Pakistan, it is equally frustrating, as they had pushed Australia and England hard here in Colombo, and had the rain allowed play, they could have challenged for a strong result. They remain the only team without a win and are anchored at the bottom with just 2 points from 5 games, both earned through washouts. They still have games left against South Africa and Sri Lanka and remain mathematically in contention for a semifinal spot.
3:36 PM IST UPDATE - 3.31 pm GMT - The steady rain continues, and it is increasingly likely that the game will be called off. The situation would have to improve drastically for play to resume, and it will be nothing short of a miracle if that happens.
3:14 PM IST UPDATE - 3.12 pm GMT - As the rain continues to fall, time is running short with the cut-off of 4.11 pm GMT less than an hour away. First, the rain needs to stop, and even then, it will take the ground staff a fair amount of time to get the outfield ready for play.
2:52 PM IST UPDATE - 2.43 pm GMT - Unfortunately, the rain has picked up. When it returned earlier, the entire ground was not covered, as it was only a light drizzle, but now the ground staff will have to bring on the remaining covers to protect the entire outfield. It is frustrating for everyone involved, but all we can do is wait for the situation to improve. Stay tuned for more news.
2:23 PM IST UPDATE - 2.11 pm GMT - And the rain is back! Just as our spirits were lifted with the news of a resumption, the drizzle has returned to dampen the mood once again, and the covers are coming on. It has been that kind of day, and this has been the story not just for this game but for most matches here in Colombo. There has also been lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, so the match officials will need to take this into account when deciding if and when play can safely resume once the rain stops. Ian Bishop informs on air that 4.11 pm GMT is the cut-off time for a 20-over chase for New Zealand.
2:10 PM IST UPDATE - 2.05 pm GMT - Right then, the match has been reduced to a 36-overs-per-side contest. The innings break will be of 10 minutes, and the Powerplay for the New Zealand innings will be of 7 overs. The game will resume at 2.22 pm GMT.
1:51 PM IST UPDATE - 1.46 pm GMT - Great news! The rain has subsided, and the covers are coming off. Since the entire ground was covered, it will take some time for all the covers to be removed, but the positive is that it wasn’t a heavy downpour, so there might not be much water pooled on the covers.
1:46 PM IST UPDATE - 1.42 pm GMT - The rain has not stopped completely, but it has certainly eased. We are hearing that 4.11 pm GMT is the cut-off time for a 20-over chase for New Zealand. Earlier, we lost an hour and 36 minutes during the first rain interruption, and it is now close to an hour since play was halted for the second time.
1:32 PM IST UPDATE - 1.30 pm GMT - Uh oh! Just as the rain had stopped and the umpires stepped out for an inspection, it has started to drizzle again.
1:47 PM IST UPDATE - 1.17 pm GMT - The rain has reduced in intensity and is down to a light drizzle. Hopefully, it stops completely soon so that the covers can come off and we can get back to playing.
1:04 PM IST UPDATE - 1.02 pm GMT - Well, not a great sight as the entire ground has now been covered. New Zealand will be disappointed with this interruption, especially after having Pakistan in a stranglehold through the spin duo of Eden Carson and Amelia Kerr. If the forecast is to be believed, the rain is expected to persist for the next couple of hours.
12:52 PM IST UPDATE - 12.48 pm GMT - That's it! The umpires have had enough and called in for the cover now. We can see the players walk off the field, and the stop-start game in Colombo continues in this World Cup. Also, we will lose some more overs due to this rain delay. Stay tuned for more updates.

12:08 PM IST We lost an hour and 36 minutes, but we are now all set for the action to resume. Sophie Devine leads her troops out to the middle. Aliya Riaz walks out alongside Natalia Pervaiz, who had come out earlier before the players left the field due to rain and is yet to face a ball. Lea Tahuhu is at the top of her mark and is ready to complete her over. Let's play...
12:01 PM IST UPDATE - 11.50 am GMT - The official word is in! We have a RESTART TIME - 12.05 pm GMT. Also, it will be a 46-overs-per-side game. With the reduction in overs, New Zealand will have an adjusted target via DLS when they come out to bat, and the Powerplay for their innings will last 9 overs. Only one bowler can bowl a maximum of 10 overs. Hopefully, the rain stays away now and we avoid any more interruptions.
11:40 AM IST UPDATE - 11.35 am GMT - Some positive news, folks! The rain has now eased off and the umpires are also having a chat with the ground staff. Well, that was quick - the covers are starting to come off as well. We might not be too far away from a resumption now, but it is very likely that we might lose some overs.
11:26 AM IST Earlier today, the New Zealand men's cricket team and England faced off in the first T20I of the three-match series at Hagley Oval - but there too, rain decided to take centre stage. Only England’s innings could be completed, as they were restricted to 153/6 with Sam Curran’s unbeaten 49 being the standout effort. With Mitchell Santner back at the helm after recovering from an injury, New Zealand’s bowlers looked sharp, with all six used getting among the wickets. Here’s hoping the weather stays kind and we avoid yet another washout here.
11:02 AM IST UPDATE - 10.57 am GMT - Oh no! The remaining covers are being brought on as the intensity of the rain has increased. According to the radar, the rain is expected to ease off in about half an hour, though the forecast for later in the evening does not look very promising. Stick around for more news.
10:53 AM IST Diana Baig was up for a chat with Sana Mir before the game. She says that they are high on morale after the previous game. Continues that they were doing well in the last match, but it got washed out. Adds that her skipper Fatima Sana is doing very well and she gives her the confidence to bowl better. Ends up saying that they can beat New Zealand and have the confidence from beating them in New Zealand. Believes that they need to do well in all three departments to get the result.
10:46 AM IST UPDATE - 10.43 am GMT - The entire ground has not been covered yet, as this does not appear to be a heavy shower and is just a light drizzle. The rain will need to stop completely before the covers can be removed, and let’s hope that happens soon.
10:40 AM IST Here's Maddy Green, who had a chat with Julia Price before the play began today. Green says that they have lost a couple of points, but they are focusing on the games coming up. Believes that they need to execute the plans properly to get the results. Ends up saying that the team has full confidence that they will turn the tide.
10:38 AM IST UPDATE - 10.27 am GMT - Natalia Pervaiz walks in next but has to return with the rest of the players on the park as the drizzle has picked up. The skies do not look as ominous as on some previous days, but it is a steady drizzle nonetheless. Let's hope that the rain subsides soon. Stay tuned for further updates.

Lea Tahuhu to Sidra Amin, no run

ballImg109.6kph

OUT! BLINDER AT POINT! Lea Tahuhu gets her second wicket! She lands this short and wide outside off, not a great delivery to be honest. Sidra Amin sees this as a scoring opportunity and frees her arms to cut it away. She connects pretty well but fails to keep it down. Eden Carson at backward point flies to her right and takes a stunning catch. Amin departs for 9 off 16, and Pakistan Women are 52/3!

It will be Omaima Sohail and Muneeba Ali to open the innings for Pakistan. Rosemary Mair will start the attack for the White Ferns. Mair to Muneeba with a slip in place. Here we go!
9:25 AM IST It is an overcast afternoon in Colombo, but nothing threatening at the moment, and hopefully, the rain stays away. We are all set for the national anthems. It will be Pakistan's national anthem first, followed by that of New Zealand.
9:16 AM IST PITCH REPORT - Alan Wilkins is near the deck. He informs that it is a warm day with humidity on the higher side. Mentions that the square boundaries measure 60 metres to one side and 57 metres to the other, with the straight hit being 70 metres. Alan expects the pacers to have a major say on this track. Aaron Finch joins him and observes that the track is dry and hard, and the grass covering is not consistent. Mentions that here in Colombo, batters have found it difficult to get going against the new ball. Reckons that standing outside the crease will give the batters a better chance at negating the movement through the air and off the deck.
9:10 AM IST The captain of Pakistan, Fatima Sana reckons that anything above 250 will be a good target and she hopes that they can score something around that mark. States that the weather is in no one's hands and hopes to put the disappointment of the last game behind them. Adds that they have the belief in themselves to beat New Zealand. Shares that she is happy with the way they have bowled in this competition and hopes to do better with the bat. Informs that they are unchanged for this game.
9:08 AM IST The captain of New Zealand, Sophie Devine believes that with the weather around and the possibility of DLS coming into play, they feel bowling first is the correct option. Shares that they need to focus on the basics and stick to their processes. She adds that she has full trust in the two opening batters. Informs that they have made one change with Lea Tahuhu coming in for Bree Illing.
9:05 AM IST Pakistan Women (Unchanged Playing XI) - Muneeba Ali, Omaima Sohail, Sidra Amin, Aliya Riaz, Natalia Pervaiz, Fatima Sana (C), Sidra Nawaz (WK), Rameen Shamim, Diana Baig, Nashra Sundhu, Sadia Iqbal.
9:05 AM IST New Zealand Women (Playing XI) - Suzie Bates, Georgia Plimmer, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine (C), Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, Izzy Gaze (WK), Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Lea Tahuhu (In for Bree Illing), Eden Carson.
9:03 AM IST TOSS - New Zealand have won the coin flip and they will BOWL first.
8:40 AM IST The anticipation is building for what could be an exhilarating contest, but the weather threatens to put a damper on the excitement. After yesterday’s match between Sri Lanka and South Africa faced a long interruption due to rain, leading to overs being reduced, today’s outlook isn't much brighter, with forecasts predicting light rain throughout the day. Let’s all hold our breath and hope for clear skies so we can enjoy an uninterrupted full game of cricket.
8:43 AM IST On the other hand, Pakistan have struggled to maintain consistency. Losing three matches and having one washed out, they haven’t yet recorded a win in the tournament, though they have managed to push several teams into the corner along the way. Their batting lineup has lacked runs from their openers, and middle-order contributions have been sporadic. However, they do have bowlers who can strike. Diana Baig, Nashra Sundhu and captain Fatima Sana will be expected to make key impacts with the ball.
8:35 AM IST New Zealand’s campaign so far has been uneven. They have secured just one victory in their first four matches, with one match washed out due to rain. That has placed them in a must-win situation if they want to have their destiny in their own hands. Their skipper, Sophie Devine, currently leads their run charts in the tournament with one century and two half-centuries. Brooke Halliday has also shown form and stability in the middle order. With bowlers like Lea Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr expected to pose challenges, New Zealand will look to balance aggression and control.

8:30 AM IST ... MATCH DAY ...
9:26 AM IST The business end of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 sees a crucial clash in Match 19 as New Zealand Women take on Pakistan Women at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This match carries significant weight for the White Ferns as they fight to climb into the top four, while Pakistan desperately seeks their first victory of the tournament. New Zealand, despite being a strong contender, currently find themselves mid-table, largely due to a couple of losses against top-tier opposition and a crucial point shared due to rain. With 3 points from four games, Captain Sophie Devine and her side know a win here is non-negotiable to keep pace with the leading teams and secure a semi-final spot. The White Ferns' batting line-up, driven by Devine and Kerr, needs to post a formidable total or chase efficiently, but they will be wary of the unpredictable weather conditions in Colombo which can shorten games and bring the DLS method into play. Pakistan enters this contest as the only team yet to register a win, sitting at the bottom of the table with just a solitary point from a rain-abandoned match against England. They have suffered defeats in their other three games. The side had a glimpse of hope in their last outing against England before the rain intervened, leaving them even hungrier for a full-match result. A victory against a strong New Zealand side would not only open their account but also inject much-needed confidence and belief into the squad, although their path to the semi-finals is mathematically challenging. The historical head-to-head record heavily favours the White Ferns, who have an imperious record of 15 wins to just 1 loss in 17 ODI encounters against Pakistan (with one tie). This history adds psychological pressure on the Pakistani side to break the dominance. The R. Premadasa Stadium has proved a challenging venue this tournament, primarily due to intermittent rain, leading to multiple abandoned or shortened matches. The pitch itself is expected to be slow and sluggish, heavily favouring the slower bowlers and spinners, making the mid-innings phase a battle of attrition. Given the high probability of rain, the team winning the toss might prefer to chase, keeping the DLS par score in mind. New Zealand are the clear favourites, but Pakistan's determination, especially after a couple of frustrating rain-affected matches, cannot be underestimated. The White Ferns' power hitters will need to adapt quickly to the slow track, while Pakistan's batters need to find a way to support Sidra Amin and build a substantial total if they bat first. Ultimately, New Zealand's greater depth in both batting and bowling gives them the edge, but they will need to be sharp to avoid a potential upset.
