A debt-ridden man, who allegedly impersonated a policeman and extorted Rs 1.47 lakh from a medicine supplier has been arrested in the national capital.

Gauri Shankar (42), a resident of Nandnagri, was caught from his residence on Tuesday following investigations into a complaint filed by one Ambika Prasad Sharma, a senior police official said on Wednesday.
"Shankar handled contracts for interior design work but was debt-ridden and used to introduce himself as a Delhi Police employee. When he met Sharma, he found that the medicine supplier was a simpleton and saw an opportunity to trick him and make money," the official said.
Sharma had approached the police on Tuesday claiming that Shankar had extorted Rs 1.47 lakh from him by posing as a Delhi Police personnel, working in the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Anand Vihar.
The complainant said he supplied medicines to one Dr DN Yadav, whom Shankar also knew for the past two years.
"In April, Yadav and Sharma were settling their accounts in the clinic and Shankar happened to come to the clinic at that time. He sent the doctor out of the clinic on some pretext and introduced himself to Sharma as a police officer," the official said.
Aiming to con Sharma, Shankar allegedly told him to give an undertaking that he had taken Rs 88,000 'loan' from him.
The conman then told the Sharma to give a cheque of Rs 50,000 as settlement for the 'loan' he took, failing which he would be framed in criminal cases.
