UK is wrong on vaccines

The controversy will also lead to diminished trust between the two countries. India, where the largest volumes of vaccines are made in the world, is among nations that hold the key to ending the pandemic. It is important that the UK takes a more reasonable position, and opens its doors to vaccinated Indians. (File photo)

Punjab: The Congress gamble

By making it untenable for Captain Amarinder Singh to continue as Punjab’s chief minister (CM), and now picking Charanjeet Singh Channi as the next CM, the Congress leadership appears to believe it has warded off anti-incumbency, ended the internal factional battle between Mr Singh and state party president Navjot Singh Sidhu, and strengthened the party in the run-up to the 2022 polls. The problem in the West

The nuclear-powered submarine USS Michigan. India’s convergence with the US helps. It creates leverage in negotiations with China. It leads to intelligence-sharing and support, as has happened in Ladakh. But Washington must realise that New Delhi cannot continue to make artificial distinctions between its east and west. Don’t communalise UP polls

A health worker sanitises voters as they wait in queues to cast votes at a polling station. The BJP’s explicit attempts to communalise the UP polls by mobilising Hindus, and the Opposition’s implicit hope to do so by winning over Muslims, is dangerous. (PTI)

Gujarat: The BJP’s poll card

The roots of Vijay Rupani’s resignation as chief minister (CM) in 2021, and that of Anandiben Patel in 2015, do not just lie in immediate political factors, though, to be sure, Covid-19 mismanagement and Patidar discontent contributed to Mr Rupani’s exit. They lie in the fact that after Narendra Modi, the BJP has not found a leader who has the political stature to sustain the party’s electoral dominance in Gujarat. And in that lies the story of both the BJP’s strength and its weakness. (PTI)

The erstwhile site of the World Trade Center twin towers is now a memorial to the 2,606 civilians, firefighters, and law enforcement officers who died in an al Qaeda on September 11, 2001. For India, 9/11 established what it had always known. Terror recognises no boundaries, and Pakistan is the real problem. (AFP)

The debate on representation

The CJI acknowledged that it was only with “great difficulty” that the Supreme Court (SC) had achieved a “mere” 11% representation of women on the bench, and said that the issue of representation of women must be “highlighted and deliberated” upon. Justice Ramana’s comments have highlighted a serious, structural lacunae in India’s legal system — the under-representation of women on the bench. (PTI)
