Not so known actress Suman Ranganathan has suddenly shot into limelight after receiving appreciation for her much talked about film Devaki. She claims there is more to her beyond skin exposure.

Your role in Devaki was appreciated during the screening in the USA. Don't you think Bollywood has been unjust in tagging you as a C-grade actress?
Before Devaki happened, I was into the list of C-grade actresses. There was an opinion about my face which people thought was fit only for down market movies. I always used to confront this but in vain. I am not a C-grade actress and my film Devaki has proved it.

Do you think that Devaki will help change your image in the industry?
Of late, not just Devaki but some other films like Joggers Park and Ek Ajnabi, have helped change my image in the industry. But I am happy that now the change is coming and I am getting better roles that I deserve.

What is so appealing about Devaki?
The film is based on a true incident. A report stated that a young woman was sold off for Rs. 5000 to an old man in Madhya Pradesh. We based the script on this real life case study.

Which is your most memorable scene of Devaki?
As the story moves on, I fall in love with one of the young villagers who is from the low caste. As punishment, the village panchayat made me stand in a village bazaar and carry a huge stone on my head. And then I kept standing till I was auctioned.

You mentioned that there was a perception about you as a C-grade actress, but that was because you have worked in such films. Why did you accept those roles?
Initially I needed a break and did a couple of movies, which were not so refined. But I always believe that I can do more that just skin exposure and when opportunities came, I proved myself.
