Chosen as one of India’s best-dressed men, actor Abhay Deol’s style mantras are surprisingly simple. “I shop for myself,” he says, adding “But I recently went through a phase where I got fed up of shopping,so I’ve stopped buying clothes.”

Recently signed on as the new brand ambassador for menswear label Indian Terrain, Deol admits that it was similar philosophies that brought them together. “They respect me as an artiste, and I’ve worn their clothes before because they’re preppy and have an international quality.” His new alliance means his clothing vocabulary has increased. “I’ve now learnt what chinos and polo T-shirts are,” he laughs.

Deol may come off as a natural in front of the movie camera, but facing a still camera used to be a task. “I used to be very nervous in front of a still camera,” he reveals. “But I picked up a couple of things on my own. I find it difficult to pose, so I do a hundred different things and hopefully, one of them will work for the photographer.”

Highly recommended
Ask the actor what are the three style tips he swears by and he responds, “It’s boring to say this, but I think a pair of jeans would be my first pick. I have all kinds of jeans, shredded, faded. But you’d never catch me wearing anything sparkly or embroidered."

Next on Deol’s list of recommendations is the classic white shirt. “You really can’t go wrong with that,” he acknowledges. Though you might be able to convince him to wear anything for a photo shoot, Deol’s on-camera quirkiness doesn’t enter his wardrobe. “With accessories, I draw the line at a nice watch,” he says, before adding, “But I like skinny ties. You’ll see me wearing a lot of those.”
