DMK president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi passed away at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai on Tuesday evening. He was 94.
The hospital said the DMK chief passed away at 6:10pm on Tuesday despite best efforts to resuscitate him. Karunanidhi had been under treatment at the hospital for the last 10 days. On Monday evening, the hospital said there was a decline in his condition.
Hundreds of DMK supporters gathered outside the hospital, mourning the loss of the veteran politician.

“With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 06.10pm. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond,” Kauvery hospital said in a statement.
“We profoundly mourn the lose of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide,” the statement said.

Thousands of DMK supporters, both men and women, had begun massing outside Kauvery hospital even before the Tuesday evening statement, some waving the party’s red-and-black flags and photos of Karunanidhi, news agency IANS reported.
“Ezhundhu Vaa Thalaivaa” (Awake, our leader) and “Vaa, Vaa, Gopalapuram Polaam Vaa” (Come, Come, let’s go to Gopalapuram) were among the slogans raised by the emotionally-charged crowd, referring to the locality where the former Chief Minister has a house.
But after the latest medical bulletin, many in the crowd started to weep on the barricaded streets.

“There has been significant decline in the clinical condition of Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi over the last few hours. Despite maximum medical support, his vital organ functions continue to deteriorate. His condition is extremely critical and unstable,” Kauvery hospital said in a health bulletin released at 4:30 pm.
DGP issues circular to all district SPs, police commissioners
A circular issued by Director General of Police TK Rajendran asked all Superintendents of Police, City Police Commissioners and others to direct officials under them to report to them immediately in uniform without delay. The circular asked them to keep enough forces to maintain law and order. The zonal inspector generals of police (IGPs) have been asked to utilise manpower within the zone depending upon the requirement.
