The Election Commission on Thursday reserved its opinion on a petition seeking disqualification of actress-turned MP Jaya Bachchan on the ground that she was holding an office of profit.
The counsels of both Bachchan and Madan Mohan Shukla appeared before the Commission to put forth their views in the case.
After hearing their arguments, the Commission gave a week's time to Bachchan to give a written submission.
"The Commission will send its opinion to the President who will pass the order in accordance with the Commission's opinion", EC sources said.
The petitioner Madan Mohan Shukla had approached President APJ Abdul Kalam seeking Bachchan's disqualification from Rajya Sabha on the ground that she was holding an office of profit as Chairperson of UP Film Development Board at the time of her election to the Upper House from the state.
Acting upon a reference from the office of the President, the Commission had issued notice to her in October last year in the matter.
