THE SUSPENDED SHO of Ghatampur was snared in his own net which he had laid to trap notorious criminal Raju Kahar in Ghatampur on May 8.
Amazingly, on the day of the encounter, Raju Kahar had surrendered to the police silently after the murder of Santan Yadav.
When the police, (who had no idea what Raju Kahar looked like) asked him about the kingpin of the gang, to save himself Raju Kahar lied to the then SHO Ghatampur MP Salonia that the gangster was lying dead before them.
The joy of the Ghatampur police at having killed a notorious criminal proved shortlived when cops from other districts were called upon to identify the deceased and they asserted that the slain person was not Raju Kahar but someone else.
At this the senior cops were aghast and they got a bigger jolt when the deceased was identified as Santan Yadav (15), a resident of Bhadras village who had no connection with the Raju Kahar gang. A highly placed source in the police department said three days prior to the fake encounter, the Ghatampur police were given information by higher officials that criminal Raju Kahar and his gang had left Jalaun and they were in all likelihood resting in Ghatampur.
Subsequently, the Ghatampur police, led by MP Salonia, started camping in the area in search of criminals, disclosed sources. Interestingly, the tip-off received by the Ghatampur police was accurate but the only mistake they made came incidentally, as they were not given a photo of Raju Kahar and throughout the campaign, they did not know what Raju Kahar looked like.
That is why when Raju Kahar was nabbed and asked by Saloniya about Raju Kahar, he was able to deceive the police by pointing to the dead 15-year-old boy. While Raju Kahar cleverly saved himself from encounter, this mistake by the cops proved costly for them eventually.
