After the killing of two sisters last week, "unknown militants" struck again in Sopore on Wednesday, shooting and injuring two persons in separate incidents.
The shooting created panic and traders downed shutters.
"In both the incidents, the militants used pistols," said Sopore superintendent of police Altaf Khan.
"We could not immediately ascertain what made the two persons potential targets," Khan said, adding, "The militants want to create fear among civilians".
The SP, however, failed to identify the organisation responsible for the attack.
"It will take some time to establish who is involved," Khan said.
In the morning the gunmen shot Majid Bashir Khan (36), a resident of Badambagh, injuring him in the leg.
Police said "some unknown militants" fired at him near his provision shop in the area.
"He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he is stable," a police official said.
In the evening, not more than 1 km from the first shootout site, another man by the name Mohammad Arif Resi (26) was shot in his foot.
Eyewitnesses said he was having tea at a local restaurant.
