State footballer dies in road mishap

He had just offered prayers at the Gol Masjid in Dhobitalao and was heading home in Madanpura, Byculla, when he was run over by a speeding water tanker near the Metro cinema junction.

State football player, Jamil Ansari (44), died in the wee hours of Sunday while being taken the nearby GT Hospital.

A key player for the football team of Central Bank of India, was employed for the past 22 years.

Formerly, he played for the Mahindra & Mahindra team.

“Ansari was walking towards the Metro cinema junction when he came under the wheels of the water tanker (MH04-CG-5901),” said Senior Inspector Bhaurao Bhawale, adding that Jamil had sustained multiple fractures.

“Jamil was a bit tense as he had been facing a financial crisis,” Ansari’s friend Mohamned Ansari told Hindustan Times. “He had left home at 6 pm he left home to go to the masjid to offer prayers.”

The sole breadwinner of his family, Jamil is survived by his wife and two children — a 16-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter.

The driver of the tanker, Shiv Yadav (22), hs been arrested.

“We have booked Yadav on charges of causing death due to negligence,” said Bhawale.
