When it comes to boarding a local train, popularly known as MEMU train, ‘unsafe’, would be the first thing that comes to mind, for sure. And they have reasons to believe so.
Frequent incidents of anarchy, eve teasing and chaos have made life hell for daily passengers. The worst stretch is between Piparsand and Harauni on the Lucknow-Kanpur route. Both stations incidentally are in the Lucknow district.
Corroborating the fact is the setting up of a PAC camp at Harauni Station following regular trouble.
Added to the ‘hall-of-shame’ list was yet another incident, which took place on the 9.30 am MEMU train from Lucknow. Interestingly, with little less rush than normal days, the train departed about 15 minutes behind scheduled from the State Capital.
However, everything was normal till they started hearing noises of bangs. A few students, probably daily travelers, were pelting stones.
Some hit the passengers including a few women and children, resulting in screeches for help from the bogie generally meant for women (The rule is not applicable in UP at least probably due to lack of civic sense or awareness). A group of students were caught by a few cops who were travelling in the same bogie, for allegedly beating up two passengers who seemed innocent.
According to a passenger, trouble broke out as one of the students asked a passenger who was also in his youth, to shift a little so that he could also sit.
The request was immediately acceded to by the youth. However, these rowdy ‘students’ did not get satisfied and asked the youth to get away from the seat, which resulted in a heated exchange of words.
Outnumbered, the lone passenger, along with another who tried to intervene, the ‘students’ beat the two youths mercilessly. They continued to beat the two youths till they started bleeding profusely and a woman sitting in the front seat started screaming for help.
On hearing the ruckus, three cops who were also travelling reached the spot and caught hold of one of the students and started returning the blows to him.
While others sensing trouble got down from the train no sooner than the train stopped at Piparsand station and collected their friends who began pelting stones blindly on the bogie.
This also helped the youth who was caught by the cops to flee from the clutches as everyone ran for shelter and leaving the two youths bleeding profusely.
