One of the dacoits, identified as Mukesh Gujjar, was killed by a shot from his drunk gang member Dhaniram.

The police said Dhaniram had aimed the shot at the fleeing family members but it hit Mukesh instead. Dhaniram was arrested later, Bharatpur Range inspector general of police Biju George Joseph said.

He said the dacoits struck Chaudakya Kalan village, in Karauli district, on Monday night and demanded `50,000 from the villagers.

But, those who refused to pay were beaten up with butts and boots, Joseph said, adding that two persons had sustained grievous injuries in the attack.

After the incident, police from three police stations – Karanpur, Kaila Devi and Sapotara – rushed to the village and arrested dacoit Dhaniram at around 5am with two dozen live cartridges and two country-made pistols.

The IG said the duo had been visiting the area to force a murder witness to turn hostile.
