IPS officer supporter threatens self-immolation

An agitator demanding the release of Dinesh MN, arrested for alleged involvement in a fake encounter case, has been taken into custody following threats of self-immolation.

An agitator demanding the release of IPS officer Dinesh MN, arrested for alleged involvement in a fake encounter case, has been taken into custody following threats of self-immolation in Udaipur district.

Sant Kartar Singh of Parsad village under Risabhdev police station, along with a group of villagers had been protesting since April 26, demanding release of the officer, held for allegedly killing extortionist Sohrabbuddin in a fake encounter.

Dinesh was the SP in Udaipur district when the encounter occurred occured on November 26, 2005.

The protestors, had threatened self-immolation by Kartar Singh on May 2 near the local bus stand at around 1600 hours, if Dinesh was
not released by May 1.

As a precautionary measure, police arrested Kartar Singh last night under Section 151 CrPC.

Udaipur district observed a bandh in support of the IPS officer on Tuesday, a first of its kind by the general public for a government official.
