Dr Morepen BG-03 review: I started tracking my mom’s blood sugar at home after her prediabetes diagnosis

I used the Dr Morepen BG-03 glucometer to monitor my mom’s blood sugar at home. Here’s a look at its features, ease of use and my experience.
I did not want my mom's prediabetes diagnosis to become something we checked only during her routine doctor visits. I wanted us to be more mindful of her blood sugar levels at home, too. Since food choices, meal timing, and physical activity can affect glucose levels, having a glucometer seemed like a practical first step. It would give us a better idea of how her readings were changing and help us discuss any concerns with her doctor. After looking at home blood sugar monitoring options, I bought the Dr Morepen GlucoOne BG-03 last year, which comes with test strips and a lancing device. I have been using it to check my mom’s blood sugar at home and keep track of her readings. Here's how my experience with this device has been.
Key features of Dr Morepen GlucoOne BG-03
The Dr Morepen BG-03 is a biosensor-based blood glucose monitoring system designed for home use. Here are its main features:
- Memory: Stores up to 300 readings, including date and time.
- Quick results: Displays blood sugar levels in approximately five seconds.
- Small blood sample: Requires just 0.5 microliters of blood.
- Three-step operation: Uses a simple test-strip system for blood sugar testing.
- Reading averages: Provides averages for 7, 14, 21, 28, 60, and 90 days, to help users track readings over time.
- Large display: Has a large screen and a compact, ergonomic design.
- Alternate site testing: Supports testing from approved sites other than the fingertip, as specified in the instruction manual.
- Measurement range: 20–600 mg/dL.
- Power: Comes with a CR2032 battery.
The kit includes the glucometer, a lancing device, 10 lancets, 25 test strips, a durable plastic storage case, an instruction manual, and a quick reference guide. It also comes with a lifetime Morepen warranty against manufacturing defects. Batteries and external accessories are not covered.
My experience: Why I use this glucometer at home
I wanted a device that would make checking my mom’s blood sugar less complicated. The BG-03 is fairly straightforward to operate, and the large display makes the readings easy to see. I also find the five-second result convenient because testing takes little time.
One feature I find particularly useful is its memory function. It stores up to 300 readings with the date and time, while the average-reading options give a broader picture instead of making me focus on just one result. This can be helpful when discussing her readings with her doctor.
The small blood sample requirement is another practical feature. The kit also includes the lancing device and lancets, which are basic accessories. However, you'll need to replenish test strips as they run out, and you must use compatible strips within their expiry date.

How to use the Dr Morepen BG-03 glucometer?
Follow the instruction manual for the exact procedure. These are the basic steps:
1. Install the battery: Insert the supplied CR2032 battery into the battery compartment, following the polarity markings. Close the cover securely and check that the meter switches on.
2. Prepare your hands and test strip: Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them completely. Take a compatible test strip from its vial, close the vial promptly, and check its expiry date. Follow the manual's instructions for any strip coding or calibration required when opening a new box.
3. Draw a blood sample: Insert the lancet into the lancing device and set the depth as instructed. Use the side of your fingertip, which is generally less sensitive than the center. Press the release button to obtain a small blood drop. Avoid squeezing the finger hard, as this can affect the sample.
4. Apply blood to the strip: Insert the strip into the meter as directed. When the blood-drop symbol appears, gently touch the strip's sample area to the blood drop and allow it to draw in the required amount.
5. Read and record the result: The meter displays the reading in about five seconds. Note the result and the time of testing, especially if you are tracking fasting or post-meal levels. Dispose of the used lancet and strip safely; never share a lancing device.
What do normal, low, and high blood sugar readings mean?
Blood sugar targets depend on the individual and when you test. For many non-pregnant adults with diabetes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists a general target of 80–130 mg/dL before meals and below 180 mg/dL one to two hours after starting a meal. These are treatment targets, not diagnostic cut-offs.
A fasting laboratory glucose of 100–125 mg/dL indicates prediabetes, while 126 mg/dL or higher may indicate diabetes and usually needs confirmation by a healthcare professional.
A reading below 70 mg/dL is generally considered low blood sugar. Discuss repeated high or low readings with a doctor rather than changing medication or diet based on one home result.
My verdict: What I like and what I don't
The Dr Morepen BG-03 offers useful basics for home monitoring: a large display, quick results, a small blood sample requirement, and memory for 300 readings. The included accessories also make it convenient to get started. However, you need to keep buying compatible test strips, and proper technique is essential for dependable readings. A home glucometer is a monitoring aid, not a replacement for laboratory tests or medical advice. I would recommend discussing the device and its readings with a healthcare professional, and bringing the meter along to compare its results with a lab test.
Note: This is my personal experience using the Dr. Morepen BG-03 glucometer for my mother. It is not medical advice. Do not change or stop blood sugar medication based on home readings without consulting a registered medical professional.
