‘We can’t have chartbusters every time’
Thoughtheir scores of Bhootnath failed to impress critics, Vishal Dadlani of composer duo Vishal-Shekhar is not disappointed. The music director chats with V Ananth.Updated: May 15, 2008, 17:37 IST
Music composer Vishal Dadlani (Vishal-Shekhar) gets candid on music, forthcoming films and more...
Your Bhoothnath score was thrashed by the critics.. disappointed?
We compose keeping a film's script in mind. But sometimes, things don't work. It's not imperative that we have to come up with chartbusters every time.
Even Tashan didn’t live up to expectations.
Nonsense, the CDs have been selling like hot cakes. Dance mare, Dil haara re and Chhaliya are chart toppers. The music wasn't mixed well.. so at times, the lyrics are incoherent. But it was marketed well. The film didn’t work but there's nothing we could do to boost its box-office ratings.
Is it true that you are composing for a Telugu film?
Yes, the Venkatesh starrer Chintakayale Ravi. It was difficult to say "no" to a friend. And when you are given a bound script before you startwork, language is not an issue.
There was that blink-and-miss appearance in Om Shanti Om. Can we look forward to more acting adventures?
OSO was my first and last attempt at acting. It was difficult to refuse Farah (Khan) and Shah Rukh (Khan) but after watching the trial show, Farah told me frankly that I was a very bad actor. If at all, people remember me, it is only because of my size. ( Laughs ) Size matters in Bollywood.
What if you got a really tempting offer?
( Laughs ) May be if it is a horror film, I'd be tempted. But if it is something better I'll pass it on to Shekhar. Not only is he younger than me but is also hero material.
But you are open to reality shows. Don’t they cut into your hectic schedule?
You’re talking about Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar which doesn’t take more than a day to shoot. I enjoy it since I connect well with Farah and get to hear new voices, some of whom I can use. It's not a bad deal. Also, Shekhar and I don't do more than one film at a time. That leaves me with time for other things like concerts with my band Pentagram and a Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar.
You claim never to have never gone to a producer for work.
It's true. We got everything on a platter. Even before Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, we were busy with ad jingles. So there was no reason to go looking for work.
How do you handle the competition?
Well, it is not as unhealthy as it was back in the ’80s. We admire Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy, AR Rahman and Pritam. At the end of the day, there are just four top-ranking composers in the industry who stand out in the crowd. Thank God we figure among them. We don’t take our work lightly and that shows in ourmusic.
You didn’t mention Himesh Reshammiya in your top list?
Himesh is a shrewd businessman.
Several composer duos have split in recent years. What keeps you together?
We are brutal in our criticism of each another. That works!
