Champion sailor Commander Abhilash Tomy underwent a surgery at an army hospital here on Thursday for a back injury he suffered while negotiating a deadly storm in the southern Indian Ocean that left his yacht crippled three weeks ago.

Indian warship INS Satpura on Friday picked up champion sailor Commander Abhilash Tomy from Île Amsterdam, a remote island in the southern Indian Ocean where he was undergoing treatment for a back injury he suffered while negotiating a deadly storm that left his yacht crippled last week.

Navy officer Abhilash Tomy was participating in the Golden Globe Race that started on 1 July from France. Tomy is the only Indian participating in the race that involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe.
