After dropping by almost 50% on its second day of release, Bollywood’s highest opener of 2019, Kalank, recovered a bit on Friday. The Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan-starrer collected an estimated Rs 11.5-12 crore on day three. The film was released on Wednesday.
A BoxofficeIndia report claimed said that this takes the film’s total earnings to approximately Rs 43 crore. The report added that Kalank has made fair collections in metros such as Mumbai and the Andhra Pradesh and Mysore regions, but it is not performing as well as expected in the Hindi belt, including East Punjab.
Also starring Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sonakshi Sinha, the film made the most of its Wednesday opening, which coincided with Mahavir Jayanti. With Rs 21.6 crore, the film became 2019’s highest opener and also the biggest opening for Alia and Varun’s careers as well their biggest opener together.
Trade experts had speculated that Kalank may collect Rs 100 crore in the first weekend – a possibility that may not become a reality if the current trends continue for Kalank at the ticket windows. Trade analyst Girish Johar had told Hindustan Times, “Looking at the buzz ahead of the film, the film should open at around Rs 18-20 crore. If a film doesn’t get good response, it tends to fall by evening. If Kalank is liked by the audience, it can easily cross Rs 100 crore during the weekend but this depends on the reviews and the word of mouth. ”
Directed by Abhishek Varman of 2 States fame, Kalank is a love story set in the 1940s with a grand backdrop.
