Bribery slur on Dwarka cops

Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked police commissioner YS Dadwal to probe a newly-wed couple’s complaint that policemen in Dwarka had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 to let them off after they were caught kissing in public.

The order came as the court was dissatisfied with the clean chit given to the accused policemen by a sub-inspector who conducted a probe ordered by the court. Justice Muralidhar said: “The allegations on the conduct of the police officials should be probed thoroughly by the commissioner himself or by a very senior level police official so that the complete truth can be unearthed.”

Noting that an expression of love by a married couple at a public place does not amount to obscenity, the court had on February 2 stayed proceedings against them for “sitting in an objectionable position near a Metro pillar and kissing ”.

The 28-year-old man and 23-year-old woman had been booked for obscenity.
