"Shamshad Ali (24) of the F55 Batallion of the CRPF, opened fire in the air while emptying the magazine of his INSAS rifle at the headquarters around 11.45pm. Soon after, he was overpowered and restrained," said a senior police officer.

During police interrogation, Ali said he had fired the weapon by mistake while cleaning it. However, sources said the incident occurred because Ali was incensed at his senior officers for not granting him leave to go to his native village.

"When questioned, Ali initially told us that he wanted to go to his native village in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad area, but had not been granted leave by his commanding officer," the officer said.

"We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. We are also questioning his colleagues and people present there during the incident," the officer added.
