With the arrest of three men on Sunday, the Vasant Kunj police claimed to have busted a gang for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of providing them with domestic help.

The accused have been identified as Bharat, 28, Jai Prakash, 25, and Vinod, 23. Bharat was the mastermind behind the racket, the police said. The arrests were made after investigations were taken up in a complaint by one SK Rathi. He had said he had been cheated by some persons, who promised to provide him with domestic helps.

Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south), said an accused took Rs 18,000 from Rathi and left a woman at his house on October 22. However, the next morning, she went missing with some cash.

“The mobile numbers on the pamphlets and visiting cards of the placement agency were found switched off. The SIM cards had been obtained on fake IDs. Even the address on the cards was fake,” she said. Later, the police learnt that calls to Rathi were made from Nawada and Uttam Nagar areas.

“The gang has 8-10 members. All belong to Bihar and other north-east states. They realised it was easy to flee after getting the commission and advance salaries of maids, and started cheating people,” she said.
