Every fan, who whooped and cheered when the Hulk declared to Captain America that he is always angry, and proceeded to smash a giant alien in the first Avengers film, would have been slightly surprised when Bruce Banner spent almost all of Avengers: Infinity War as himself and not as his angry, green alter-ego. The directors of the film, Joe & Anthony Russo, have revealed why Banner had such a difficult time ‘Hulking’ out in Infinity War.
“I think people have interpreted it as Hulk’s scared. I mean, certainly, that’s not a… I don’t know that the Hulk is ever... he’s had his ass kicked before, and he loves a good fight. But I think that it’s really reflective of the journey from Ragnarok,” Joe said in an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
In the first scene of Infinity War, set on the villainous Thanos’ spaceship, Banner is summoned with a familiar ‘We have a Hulk’ call, after which he gets beaten down by Thanos. He is then transported back to Earth, where he informs Doctor Strange and Tony Stark of the impending threat. Throughout the film, we see Banner attempt to transform into the Hulk, but with little success. In the climactic battle in Wakanda, he is given an armour by Tony to help him fight alongside the Avengers.
“These two characters are constantly in conflict with each other over control. And I think that if the Hulk were to say why, it’d be Banner only wants Hulk for fighting. I think he’s had enough of saving Banner’s a**,” Russo continued.
The directors had also clarified on the same podcast why certain scenes we saw in the trailer weren’t in the final film.
About the Hulk problem, as it has been christened online, the filmmakers suggest that both Banner and Hulk are separate characters, each with his own mind. And Hulk is tired of protecting Banner, especially after the events of Thor: Ragnarok.
Infinity War, meanwhile, has become the highest grossing Hollywood movie in India, with over Rs 246 crore in the bank. The film’s global total stands at $1.1 billion, which it has made in record time.
