Concerned about the effect that the underground portion of the air-conditioned Oval Maidan-Virar rail corridor would have on the existing structures, residents of Oval Maidan area want the authorities to share the plan with them before starting the project.

The residents will be writing to railway authorities concerned asking them to share project plan and the duration of the project. “The locals should be taken into confidence before execution of such a major project. Care should be taken that while constructing underground infrastructure, other structures above ground level are not affected,” said Ashad Mehta, president, Oval Cooperage Residents Association.

Citizens said the Oval Maidan shouldn’t be affected by the project. “Any physical intervention in the existing Oval Maidan structure will not be supported by the residents. We would like to participate in the planning and execution of the project,” said Nayana Kathpalia, trustee of OVAL Trust.

Residents also demanded clarity on the duration of the project. “The railways should inform us about the time they will need for completing the project and ensure that is ready by the deadline,”said Nilesh Baxi, Society for Improvement, Greenery and Nature.
