The Mulund police said for the past few years Lavesh Ghanekar, a driver, who lives in Bhandup, was in a relationship with a woman, who was his neighbour when he used to live in Mulund.

Four days ago, the woman apparently told Ghanekar that they would have to part ways as her parents had fixed her wedding with someone else. “Though Ghanekar tried to convince the woman, she said she could not go against her parents’ wishes. This had upset Ghanekar,” said Mahadev Gundewadi, assistant commissioner of police (Mulund division).

Aware that the woman normally dropped off her 12-year-old brother to school by 12.30pm every day, Ghanekar waited for her at the main road in Sarvodaya Nagar, Mulund, on Thursday. “As she reached the spot, he allegedly attacked her with an aluminium sheet four times, injuring her on the face and neck. He fled when people started gathering around,” said Gundewadi.

Locals took the woman to Agarwal hospital at Mulund, where she is currently recuperating. On investigation, the Mulund police found out that the attacker, who lived in Bhandup, was known to the woman.

A police team then arrested Ghanekar from his house for causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon.
