Three missiles fired by the drone hit a madrassa or seminary and a residential compound located about 15 km from Wana, the main town in South Waziristan Agency, officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.

The identity of the five persons killed in the attack could not immediately be ascertained.

The Pakistani military has been using gunship helicopters and artillery to pound Taliban positions in South Waziristan ahead of a planned offensive against Mehsud and his network.

Thousands of people have fled the region in the past few days due to fears of a military operation.
