Delhi traffic police issues 7,298 challans to e-rickshaws for traffic violations

The road safety drive across Delhi’s traffic-prone locations, aimed to penalise e-rickshaws and other vehicles involved in life-threatening traffic violations.

The Delhi Traffic Police said it issued 7,298 challans against e-rickshaws and impounded 63 such vehicles for “haphazard” driving during a week-long enforcement drive in the city.

The drive, carried out from August 16-22 across Delhi’s congestion-prone locations, aimed to penalise e-rickshaws and other vehicles involved in life-threatening traffic violations.

Challans issued for road safety violations

Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Vijayanta Arya Goyal said the e-rickshaws were impounded for alleged haphazard driving, wrong-side movement, abrupt stopping, and unsafe manoeuvring, which disrupt traffic flow and pose risks to other road users.

Additionally, 7,675 challans were issued for wrong-side driving, 22,992 for riding without a helmet, and 1,568 for triple riding, Goyal added.

“The drive focused on violations that directly compromise road safety and expose motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users to serious risk. Wrong-side driving disrupts the prescribed flow of traffic and creates sudden conflict points, while riding without a helmet and triple riding significantly increase the vulnerability of two-wheeler riders in the event of a road crash. This year so far, we have registered 2,676 FIRs under appropriate legal provisions in cases involving blatant violations of wrong-side driving,” she added.

Meanwhile, the traffic police on Saturday held a coordination meeting — Traffic Panchayat — at NDMC’s Disaster Management Centre. The discussion focused on solutions for traffic regulation, parking, traffic management, encroachment, pick-and-drop arrangements, and security surveillance. It was attended by special commissioner of police (traffic) Ajay Chaudhary, joint commissioner of police (traffic) Sanjay Tyagi, NDMC officials, and members of the Khan Market Traders Association.
