Age 63IndiaINDIA
Right-arm medium Bowler

Driven by an unyielding spirit and a rare versatility, Manoj Prabhakar etched a unique footprint in Indian cricket as one of the few players in international history capable of opening both the batting and the bowling in the same match. Born on April 15, 1963, in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, the tenacious all-rounder embodied gritty determination whenever he stepped onto the field. He made his international arrival during a One-Day International against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in April 1984, before earning his Test cap on his domestic home ground in Delhi against England in December 1984. Whether taking the shine off the fresh leather with the ball or blunting hostile pace with the bat, Prabhakar quickly became a central tactical asset for the national side.

Equipped with a lethal outswinger, sharp cutters, and a deceptive slower ball, Prabhakar was a master of seam movement in all conditions. Alongside Kapil Dev, he became an early pioneer of reverse swing in subcontinental conditions, breaking major partnerships in crucial Test series. His bowling reached its peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s, highlighted by career-best Test bowling figures of 6 for 132 against Pakistan. Equally adept with the bat, he transformed himself into a dependable defensive opener, registering nine Test half-centuries alongside a memorable maiden Test century when he scored 120 against a formidable West Indies attack at Mohali in 1994.

Over his 12-year international career, Prabhakar represented India in 39 Tests, scoring 1,600 runs at an average of 32.65 and capturing 96 wickets. In One-Day Internationals, he accumulated 1,858 runs with two centuries, including a highest score of 106 against Pakistan and snared 157 wickets across 130 matches. His distinct double role set a global standard for workload, holds world records for opening both batting and bowling in the highest number of international fixtures, and played a crucial role in India's title-winning campaigns at multiple Asia Cup tournaments.

Following his retirement from active playing in 1996, Prabhakar transitioned into coaching and mentoring. He brought his deep tactical knowledge to domestic and international setups, serving as a bowling coach for Delhi and head coach for Rajasthan, before working internationally with the national teams of Afghanistan and Nepal.
