From learning his trade in the coastal maidans of Odisha to becoming a master of classic left-arm orthodox spin in Hyderabad, Pragyan Ojha developed one of the most technically refined bowling actions of his generation. Born on September 5, 1986, Ojha combined high-arm flight, late drift, and sharp turn away from the right-hander. Rising through the domestic ranks for Hyderabad with relentless consistency, he announced his readiness for the top flight during the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy, capturing 29 wickets in just six matches to catch the eye of national selectors.
His progression into the international arena took place across all three formats with striking poise. Ojha earned his One-Day International cap against Bangladesh at Karachi during the 2008 Asia Cup, making an instant impact with his disciplined control. A year later, he marked his Twenty20 International debut against the same opposition at Nottingham during the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, producing a match-winning spell of 4 for 21. His crowning transition into Test cricket arrived in November 2009 against Sri Lanka at Kanpur, where he claimed four wickets to help secure India's landmark 100th Test victory.
At his absolute peak, Ojha formed a formidable spin partnership alongside Ravichandran Ashwin, making India virtually unassailable in home Test conditions. Using subtle speed variations and a deceptive arm ball, he routinely dismantled top orders, most notably during the 2011 home series against the West Indies, where he claimed 20 wickets across three Tests. His career climaxed in dramatic fashion during the historic 2013 Mumbai Test against the West Indies, Sachin Tendulkar's 200th and final Test, where Ojha produced a majestic match haul of 10 for 89, earning the Player of the Match award on the iconic stage.
Across 24 Test matches, Ojha captured 113 wickets at an average of 30.26, featuring seven five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket match performance. In white-ball cricket, he claimed 21 wickets in 18 ODIs and 10 wickets in 6 T20 Internationals, while picking up 89 wickets in 92 Indian Premier League games across successful stints with Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians, including a Purple Cap-winning season in 2010. After retiring from all professional formats in February 2020, he transitioned into cricket administration and commentary.
