Cops at work, women safer

The new year began on a safer note for women in the Capital. Rape and molestation cases dropped 44% this year over the first three months.
The last three months of 2010 had witnessed unprecedented increase in crime when 25 cases of rape, gangrape and abduction shook the Capital.
The reason: Delhi Police have revamped their strategy on women’s security and
training a crack team of women cops to make the city safer for women.
Action on the ground includes a massive crackdown on BPOs and other private firms that have women employees working graveyard shifts.
Over the last three months, the Delhi Police have arrested 15 cab drivers for not dropping women at their doorstep.
Action has been taken against 15 BPOs and private companies, including two private airlines.
To make roads safer, women police personnel are getting commando training, with 461 currently learning the basics of combat at the police-training academy. Women on traffic duty are also being trained to assist them.
"We are committed to making the city a safe place for women. Our women personnel are heading police stations, districts and getting commando training. We want women to approach the police with any sort of problem they face," said Delhi Police chief BK Gupta.
Other than that, the police are pressing for speedy trials of rape cases in fast-track courts so that accused are convicted in the least possible time.
With more than one thousand female police personnel recently recruited, the Capital's police is going all out to prove that they are approachable and ready to help in every way possible.
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has also prioritised providing security of women. "We need put in united efforts to improve security of women in the city," said Dikshit, on the eve of International Women's Day.
