"Investment in education and training is an investment in the future of the country," Manmohan Singh said as Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyaev looked on.

"Countries must redouble efforts to bridge the knowledge gap, both within themselves and with advanced economies," he added.

"I am confident that the centre will train knowledge workers in Uzbekistan to enable them to compete with confidence in the global marketplace," Manmohan Singh said.

Manmohan Singh was in Uzbekistan on a 24-hour state visit - the first by an Indian head of government to this country in the last 13 years.
