St Stephen's opens admissions to BA, BSc courses
The college invited online applications for its BA (Programme) and BSc (Programme) from 9am on Wednesday and the candidates have been given time until the midnight of July 8 to fill in their applications.
St Stephen’s College on Wednesday started inviting applications for admissions to its BA (Programme) and BSc (Programme) courses.
Colleges under the university were asked to do away with the Programme courses after the introduction of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) in 2013.
But with the scrapping of the programme under orders from the University Grants Commission (UGC), these courses have been brought back by the college.
The college invited online applications for its BA (Programme) and BSc (Programme) from 9am on Wednesday and the candidates have been given time until the midnight of July 8 to fill in their applications.
“Given the scheme of things that prevailed when the admission process in St Stephens’ College got under way, applicants for admission to BA (Programme) and BSc (Programme) courses were not invited as they did not exist then,” read a statement issued by the college on Wednesday.
After the university restored these courses, the college duly followed the admission process for these courses, the statement added.
After receiving the applications from candidates, it will be closely scrutinised to check for matching of its eligibility criteria. Once this is done, the college will announce a list of candidates shortlisted for interviews to the courses sometime in the evening of July 9.
The college will then follow to conduct interviews of the shortlisted candidates on July 11, 12 and 14.
Shortlisted students would be informed of the date of interview through a declaration that will be made available on the college’s official website once the shortlist has been released.
For the BA (Programme) course, six out of the available 50 seats will be reserved for candidates who opt for Urdu as an optional language for their graduation. However, the college requires such students to have studied the language atleast up to the 10th grade in their school.
St. Stephens’ and Jesus and Mary colleges are the only two colleges under Delhi University that have been granted special privileges by the Supreme Court under Article 30 (1).
This allows the two colleges to follow its own selection procedure, separate from other colleges under the university.
With the confusion of FYUP reeling at the time of admissions in May, the college had released a ‘provisional’ list of candidates selected by the college.
But with FYUP being scraped and colleges being asked to comply with the 2012 standard of admissions, the college was forced to admit only 50 students for Economics (Hons) as opposed to the list of 100 candidates announced by the college and merely 30 students for English (Hons) instead of the 60 candidates shortlisted.
