The work to widen three entry and three exit points on Delhi-Gurgaon expressway is likely to start from next month. Officials of the Millennium City Expressway Private Limited (MCEPL), the concessionaire for this road, said an amount of 6.5 crore has been sanctioned for the widening of the entry-exit points between Signature Tower crossing and Jharsa Chowk.

According to the plan, the authority will widen exit-8 in Sector 31, entry-7 in Sector 31 and exit-9 at Jharsa on the side towards Jaipur, also called the left hand side (LHS) of the highway. These exits would be widened by around five to six metres. On the Right hand side (RHS), which is the Jaipur to Delhi side of the highway, the authority will widen entry-14, exit-15 —in Sector 31 — and entry- 13 at Jharsa village. Preliminary work such as felling of trees and removing of pillars alongside the drain from which the service lane starts is already underway, officials said.

S Raghuraman, CEO, MCEPL, said, “We have already started the preliminary work. Now we are waiting for the land to be transferred by local authorities. This widening will ease congestion between Signature tower and Jharsa Chowk, where traffic flow has increased in the last few years. The work will be started next month,” he said.

Another reason for widening of these six entry-exits, MCEPL officials said, is that a number of commercial buildings have come up along the expressway on the stretch between Signature tower and Jharsa, which has increased the number of vehicles entering and exiting the highway in this stretch.

As the land needed for widening of these stretches falls in the green belt that is under the Gurugram Development Authority, MCEPL said they are waiting for its handover after which work would be started.

Office-goers welcomed the move and exits but said efforts should be made to save the greenery . “A bus service has been launched and I hope people use it more so there is no need to cut trees for widening roads,” said Diwakar Kumar, an executive who uses the stretch.

For expansion of these points, the contractor had to fell 158 trees for which permission was taken from forest department.
