Some careers are measured in numbers, and some in the doors they open for others. Jhulan Goswami's is both. She retired as the highest wicket-taker in women's One Day International history, but her greater legacy is that a generation of Indian girls now picks up a cricket ball believing they can bowl fast. Her story begins not in a stadium but on a railway platform in a small Bengal town, with a dream that most people around her thought impractical.
Born in Chakdaha, a town in West Bengal's Nadia district where cricket for girls was barely imaginable. There were no academies, no teams and few role models. She played with boys in the neighbourhood, and she was reportedly not an obvious talent at first, a little shy and more of a spectator than a star. Then came 1997. Watching the Women's World Cup final at Eden Gardens, she saw women playing cricket on a grand stage, and something shifted. What had been a pastime became an ambition. Finding a way to pursue it was another matter.
Serious training meant reaching Kolkata, and Kolkata meant a long journey from Chakdaha. Jhulan made it by train, rising before dawn, hauling her kit through crowded compartments and returning home late. There was no glamour in it. Her daily routine tested her patience and stamina long before any opponent did. Her coach, Swapan Sadhu, saw something worth shaping. Her pace was modest at first, but her determination was not. Over time, she turned herself into a genuine fast bowler, one who understood that speed alone was not enough. Control, seam position and relentless accuracy would become her signature.
In January 2002, she made her international debut against England. Women's cricket in India was then underfunded and under-watched, with little television coverage and few of the opportunities that exist today. She began her career in that environment and built her reputation on consistency rather than spectacle. She moved the ball, hit the same spot over and over, and gave her captains a bowler they could trust in any situation. Early on, India's attack leaned heavily on her, and she carried that responsibility without complaint.
By 2008, she was captain of India, leading the side for a few years while continuing to bowl at the front of the attack. Her leadership was quiet rather than loud, built on example and work ethic. Younger bowlers watched how she prepared, how she recovered and how she kept her standards high season after season. India reached the World Cup final in 2005 and again in 2017. Both times they fell short, but those finals showed how far the team had come, and Jhulan was central to both campaigns. The 2017 final at Lord's, lost narrowly to England, remains one of the most poignant chapters in Indian women's cricket. It also helped ignite a wave of national interest in the women's game.
In the one-day format, she overtook Australia's Cathryn Fitzpatrick to become the leading wicket-taker of all time, finishing with 255 wickets in 204 matches. Fast bowling is physically punishing, and few players of any gender remain effective into their late 30s, but she did. Her honours include the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year award in 2007, the Arjuna Award in 2010 and the Padma Shri in 2012. Yet those who watched her closely often spoke less about trophies than about her reliability, a bowler who simply turned up and delivered.
She retired from international cricket in September 2022, and her final match was an ODI against England at Lord's, the same ground as the 2017 final and against the team she had debuted against two decades earlier. It was a fitting circle to close as India won, and the sight of her teammates honouring her made clear what she meant to the dressing room. Retirement did not mean leaving the game. She moved into coaching and mentoring, including a role with the Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League, passing on to young bowlers what the train rides, the long spells and the setbacks had taught her.
