Nitish urges Centre to protect Biharis

Nitish Kumar says the Centre should ensure that lives of Biharis settled in Manipur are safe, reports Amitabh Jha.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has demanded effective Central intervention to check violence against people from Bihar in Manipur and other parts of North-East. He also announced his Government’s decision to give compensation to the victims.

Talking to newsmen, the Chief Minister said that the Centre should initiate strict action against perpetrators of the violence and esnure that lives of Biharis settled in Manipur are safe. He said the people being targeted had been living in Manipur for generations, and added that the Centre should take steps to ensure that such incidents did not take place in that State or elsewhere in the North-East.

The Chief Minister said Chief Secretary RJM Pillai and Director-General of Police (DGP) AR Sinha had spoken to Manipur officials about the safety and security of Biharis there.
