Fast bowling has always come with a trade-off between speed and durability, and few careers illustrate that tension as clearly as Mark Wood's. The Durham quick built his entire international reputation on raw pace, regularly touching speeds beyond 145 km/h with a skiddy, whippy action that hurried batters in a way few of his England contemporaries could match. That pace came at a real cost, with injuries repeatedly interrupting a career that nonetheless produced some of the most electric fast bowling of his generation.
Wood grew up in Ashington, Northumberland, a town that also produced England fast-bowling great Steve Harmison. His journey in professional cricket began with Durham, for whom he made his first-class debut in 2011. Four years later, he received his Test cap at Lord's against New Zealand, arriving on the international scene during an Ashes-winning summer for England.
Wood was already aware that his pace came with a physical cost. Around 2018, he made a significant adjustment to his bowling, moving from a short run-up to a longer one. The idea was to take some pressure off his body while allowing him to retain the speed that made him such a threat. It helped, but injuries continued to follow him throughout his career, with his ankle, elbow and knee all causing problems at different stages.
When Wood was fit and firing, there were few more exciting sights in English cricket. He played an important role in England's 2019 World Cup triumph, finishing the tournament with 18 wickets. His ability to generate serious pace also made him a key figure on the 2021-22 Ashes tour. England lost the series heavily, but Wood stood out with 17 wickets.
Mark added another major honour to his collection at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Wood took 9 wickets in 4 appearances before injury prevented him from featuring in the knockout matches. England went on to lift the trophy, making Wood one of the select group of players to have won both the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.
Wood's impact was perhaps most vividly felt during the 2023 Ashes. Brought back into the side for the Headingley Test, Wood immediately changed the tempo of the contest with his raw pace. He finished with 7 wickets in the match and then played a crucial role with the bat in the second innings. Wood and Chris Woakes put together an important 8-wicket partnership to guide England home and seal a memorable victory.
By then, managing Wood's workload had become almost as important as unleashing his pace. England handed him a three-year central contract in late 2023, with the arrangement designed to give him greater control over his workload and prioritise international cricket. However, injuries continued to disrupt his career, and the setbacks only became more significant as he moved into 2025.
Wood suffered a knee injury during the Champions Trophy that required surgery, ruling him out of England's entire home Test summer. He battled his way back in time for the opening Ashes Test in Perth later that year, but the comeback was painfully brief. After bowling only 11 overs, the same knee problem resurfaced and brought his involvement in the series to an end.
For all the injuries that interrupted his career, Wood's willingness to keep coming back became as defining as his pace itself. However, medical advice eventually made it clear that Test and ODI cricket were no longer viable options, and the England dream gradually slipped away. After years of battling injuries, Wood finally announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 36. He, however, expressed a desire to continue playing T20 cricket for Durham and in franchise leagues.
