Under the floodlights of Kingsmead in Durban during the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, Ashish Nehra produced one of the most spellbinding fast-bowling performances in Indian cricket history. Battling a severe ankle injury and relying on a diet of bananas and enthusiasm, the lean left-arm fast bowler ran through England's batting lineup with relentless pace and precise late swing. Charging in with his characteristic energetic stride, Nehra tore through the middle order to finish with phenomenal figures of 6 for 23. Born on April 29, 1979, in Delhi, Nehra made his international entry during a Test match against Sri Lanka at Colombo in February 1999. He later added his One-Day International debut against Zimbabwe at Harare in June 2001, quickly establishing himself as India's premier left-arm seam option.
Nehra's career trajectory was defined as much by his physical resilience as by his skill. Enduring over a dozen major surgeries across two decades, he continually reinvented his action and approach to remain competitive at the highest level. His ability to swing the brand-new ball both ways made him an immediate wicket-taking threat, while his tactical evolution into a master of variations and death bowling gave his career extraordinary longevity. He played a pivotal role in India's victorious 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign, including a crucial spell of 2 for 33 in the high-pressure semi-final against Pakistan at Mohali.
In the final phase of his career, Nehra staged a remarkable international comeback in Twenty20 cricket, having made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka at Nagpur in December 2009. Re-emerging as a seasoned white-ball specialist in his late thirties, his disciplined lengths and early breakthroughs helped lead India to the semi-finals of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, where he earned a selection in the Team of the Tournament. He eventually called time on his international career in November 2017, taking an emotional farewell on his home ground at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi against New Zealand.
Across his international career, Nehra represented India in 17 Test matches, taking 44 wickets, while capturing 157 wickets in 120 ODIs and 34 wickets in 27 T20 Internationals. He was equally influential in franchise cricket, taking 106 wickets in 88 Indian Premier League matches for teams like Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Following his playing retirement, he successfully transitioned into coaching, leading the Gujarat Titans to an IPL title as head coach and becoming the first Indian head coach to win the tournament.
